This book contains 29 awesome Native American fairy tales, and one not-so-great story of the Sioux attacking a party of white hunters, but that's just the last story, and thus is easily ignored.Still; 29 stories which I cannot recommend highly enough, involving fairies and nature spirits and great heroes and all that good stuff. The stories are from various sources and tribes, and are appropriate for all ages.
There are a small number of footnotes which are not linked, but the notes are at the end of each story, so there's no real harm done.
There is an active table of contents. There is a pronunciation guide at the back of the book, but it is empty and thus useless.

These stories are legends composed in 1912, except for one which is said to be an actual account of a battle between some 65 settlers and their families who were out hunting in Sioux country who were attacked by thousands of Indians. It is the least fun tale, and not very exciting. But the other 29 are cute.
In one of the 29 tales, ten brothers go out to fight a Manitou, a spirit of a dead Indian who turned into a ferocious giant bear. While the Manitou slept, the ten stole its precious wampum, a belt of narrow beads made out of shells that it was wearing around its neck. They ran. But the Manitou awoke and chased them. The older brother assured them that they would be safe because he saw each part of the chase in a dream. It happened as he dreamed. They came to a lodge and an old man who was a Manitou tried to help them, even performed magic, but to no avail. They ran again, and again they found another Manitou who tried but failed to help them despite his magic. So again, they ran. They came to a lake where there was a canoe with ten paddles, one for each brother. They rowed fast and the bear could not get into the water. But the bear began to drink the water and, as the water decreased, the canoe was drawn toward the bear. Then a woman saved them and the narrator tells us that this accounts for....
In another story a great Indian chief was always successful in battle and even won his last war, but he was shot with a poison arrow. Before he died he requested that his son not engage in war as he did. His son complied but his enemies considered him a coward. A member of his tribe told an enemy tribe how they could easily defeat his tribe with a coward as a leader. The story tells what happens next.
Interesting light read. Some stories had universal themes of honor, loyalty, etc.

These Indian stories seem to be meant for children's bedtime stories. I read them all, but even my own self was falling asleep by the time I got halfway finished... Yawn. ZZZZZZ....
I had no idea that there were so many legends about... well, you'll see if you read it. Not bad, fairly what is advertised.
This was a fun book! If you want to feel the "hairs lifting on your neck", read this to your family around a campfire deep in the forest and late at night! Lol!
These legends are very clever and make one think about how they developed. If one is familiar with Indian life and lore, it is easy to understand the circumstances which may have been a precursor for the several moods that develop in many of the stories. As with most cultural legends, I am fascinated with the lifestyles that have produced them during times of total lack of communication between regions, and the similarities among so many of the worlds cultural legends.
